Box set containing four films from the popular 'Batman' film
series. 'Batman' (1989) was the first big screen outing for Bob
Kane's caped crusader. The streets of Gotham City are no longer
safe for criminals, who are being picked off by a masked vigilante
in a rubber suit - dubbed 'Batman' by the press. Reporter Alexander
Knox (Robert Wuhl) teams with photographer Vicki Vale (Kim
Basinger) in an attempt to discover Batman's true identity - an
investigation which leads them to the door of mysterious
millioniare Bruce Wayne (Michael Keaton). Meanwhile, crime boss
Carl Grissom's (Jack Palance) attempt to rid himself of
untrustworthy henchman Jack Napier (Jack Nicholson) does not go
according to plan, and after emerging physically - and mentally -
disfigured from a vat of chemicals, Napier reinvents himself as the
psychotic Joker. In 'Batman Returns' (1992), Oswald Cobblepot was
abandoned by his parents as a baby. Thirty three years later, bent
on revenge, he returns to Gotham City as the Penguin (Danny
DeVito). First he begins a warped campaign to become Mayor, helped
by millionaire businessman Max Shreck (Christopher Walken); next,
he undertakes a mission to murder every first born son in Gotham -
a plan which will avenge his own beginnings. Meanwhile, he has two
adversaries to contend with: Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer), the
embittered ex-secretary of Max Shreck, and, of course, the old
caped crusader himself (Keaton). In 'Batman Forever' (1995), former
District Attorney Harvey Two-Face (Tommy Lee Jones) is terrorising
Gotham City, when a new villain appears on the scene - the Riddler
(Jim Carrey). Together they plot to discover Batman's (Val Kilmer)
identity, using a device which can probe the human mind. Meanwhile,
the caped crusader has been joined by Robin (Chris O'Donnell),
whose trapeze-artist family have recently been slain by Two-Face.
'Finally, in 'Batman and Robin' (1997), Batman (George Clooney) and
Robin (O'Donnell) have to stop the vengeful Mr Freeze (Arnold
Schwarzenegger) from taking over Gotham City by using his new ice
weapon. To make matters worse, the venomous Poison Ivy (Uma
Thurman) decides to join forces with Freeze, so making an almost
undefeatable double-whammy of a team. Luckily for the caped
crusader and his rebellious ward, they can team up with a new tough
and courageous new partner - Batgirl (Alicia Silverstone).
What are we doing when taking psychoanalysis from the couch to the
analysis of society, culture, and arts? How is it possible to do
so? How is it possible to move from singular experiences to
universal structures detected in culture and society? Could
psychoanalysis applied to art works become more sensitive to their
aesthetics form? Psychoanalysis is often disclaimed as
non-scientific, since its main object - the unconscious - has no
positive existence. This book, however, proposes psychoanalysis to
be a "science of the signifier". It takes as its object the
signifier - the signifying part of the sign - insisting that it
always says more (or less) than intended, because its very
materiality carries unintended messages. By defining the object of
psychoanalysis as the signifier, this volume argues that we can
speak of psychoanalysis as a science, even if it is closer to
semiotics than biology. Analysing the Cultural Unconscious builds
on this idea by arguing that the analysis of the signifier is the
way to understand not only the individual unconscious, but also the
cultural one. Replacing a person's monologue on the couch with
ideology criticism or a piece of art, applied psychoanalysis allows
us to analyse culture and the arts in a new way, uncovering the
cultural unconscious.
Five animated adventures from the caped crusader of Gotham City. In
'Leather Wings', the police suspect that Batman is responsible for
a horrifying bat creature that is terrorizing Gotham city. Batman
must act quickly to clear his name and find the true culprit. The
Joker escapes from Arkham Asylum in 'Christmas With the Joker' so
that he can host his own deadly TV Christmas Special. In 'Nothing
to Fear', Batman must face his deepest fear to defeat Gotham's
newest super-villain, the Scarecrow. 'The Last Laugh' sees the
Joker threatening Gotham City with a dangerous mind-altering
lauging gas. Poison Ivy appears for the first time in 'A Pretty
Poison', disguising herself as Pamela Isley to threaten the life of
her new 'fiancé' District Attorney Harvey Dent with her deadly
embrace, after he unwittingly eradicated a rare flower species
several years before.

"Kantian Deeds" revokes and renews the tradition of Kant's moral
philosophy. Through a novel reading of contemporary approaches to
Kant, Henrik Bjerre draws a new map of the human capacity for
morality.
Morality consists of two different abilities that are rarely
appreciated at the same time. Human beings are brought up and
initiated into a moral culture, which gives them the cognitive
mapping necessary to act morally and responsibly. They also,
however, acquire an ability to reach beyond that which is
considered moral and thus develop an ability to reinterpret or
break 'normal' morality.
By drawing on two very different resources in contemporary
philosophy - more conservative trends in analytic philosophy and
more radical sources in recent works of psychoanalytically informed
philosophy - and claiming that they must be read together, "Kantian
Deeds" provides a new understanding of what is termed 'the
structure of moral revolutions'. Essentially, deeds are
revolutionary changes of moral character that can only be performed
by such creatures that have acquired one.
A study of Slavoj Zizek's political philosophy. Focusing on the
combination of psychoanalytic theory and philosophy, the book
offers an overview of Zizek's analysis of contemporary society. In
five chapters, the reader is introduced to Zizek's method, his view
of the political impasse in the postmodern world, and his
suggestion for a way ahead to renewed action and political
invention. Rich in examples, the book gives an engaging and
entertaining tour around the landscape of Zizek's political
endeavour, while at the same time insisting on a more systematic
and piecemeal approach than the Slovenian tends to offer himself.

wholly original arguments, perspectives and research findings in
